In Theaters, February 14th

Mike Powell is the most popular guy on campus...but his girlfriend Claire dumped him last week...and she's already in a new relationship on facebook. In order to get his friends to stop asking him about 'how he's doing', he creates a cyber girlfriend named Julie, using a picture from an old yearbook in the library. When people find out that Mike is dating an unknown, a cult of celebrity and rumor emerge around her. His fake girlfriend is being spotted around campus, is invited to parties, and is elected one of the ten hottest sophomores. But when Claire gets jealous and asks Mike to get back together, he quickly dumps Julie and deletes her profile...or so he thought. The next day, she pokes him. After that, she writes on his wall. She tags pictures of the two of them. Mike thinks that someone knows about his lie and is simply messing with him, but things get a lot more serious when a fire mysteriously starts at his fraternity. When the strange incidents continue, the plot devolves into a murderous story of eternal love. Its kind of like that re-cut trailer of 'sleepless in seattle' mixed with 'my bloody valentine' (The trailer, of course; I've never seen that move).

Casting du Jour

If Bel Canto is ever made into a film, Emily Blunt should play Roxanne Coss.

Oops, He Did it Again

I had a thought today about a Lynchian movie about an old man who retires and decides to reenact the Britney Spears meltdown step-by-step. Marrying a backup dancer; chopping off his hair; nearly overdosing. The whole thing. And it would address how society interprets the actions of an old man vs. that of a starlet. He'd be played by a cute but curmudgeonly type (maybe Wallace Shawn?) and the wife he ditches would be played by Barbara Walters. Thoughts?
